Tasting Notes

Martin Codax ~ Caixas Albariño 2019 DO ~ Rias Baixas, Spain

The Vigneview Verdict

Wow! If there was ever a refreshing European white wine that I couldn’t get enough of, this Martin Codax Caixas Albariño 2019 would be it. Beautiful blossom aromas with notes of citrus and stone fruit. On the palate, the flavours really define themselves with lemon, grapefruit, nectarine, peach and some salinity shining through. Although this isn’t the most refreshing Albariño wine I’ve had, it possesses plenty of zest on the palate and carries the flavours on a satisfying finish. This wine gives you a hug rather than a great big kiss!

Albarino Caixas

The Albariño variety is indigenous to Galicia and thrives in the famed Rías Baixas DO. Due to its close proximity to the Atlantic, this area is fertile, cooled by maritime breezes and benefits from plenty of rainfall. Albariño ripens early, which enables it to retain more acidity and it grows best in dry soils. Granite and schist soils are most common throughout the region; however, along the larger rivers and tributaries clay, sand, silt and gravel can be found. These soil types are ideal for imparting minerality within the wine. Additionally, the wines from this region are reflective of cooler climate terroir as they are lower in alcohol than most Spanish wines, possess vibrant acidity and are medium to medium- in body.

Food Pairing

This Martin Codax Caixas Albariño 2019 pairs beautifully with fresh seafood and the local Galician Tetilla cheese.

Cheers! x
