The Vigneview Verdict
If you’ve never had an Austrian wine before, then this bottle of Domäne Wachau Weissenkirchen Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 2019 is a great place to start. Earning the 2020 title for ‘Best Vineyard in Europe‘, this estate is definitely making a name for itself. The term ‘smaragd’ on the label is unique to Wachau and indicates that only the best grapes were used to produce a dry, complex wine.

In order to maintain freshness, the grapes were picked by hand, gently processed in a pneumatic press and then fermented in stainless steel tanks. Flavours and aromas of green apples and pears awaken the senses, while vibrant acidity tantalises the palate. Subtle white pepper and smokey notes add a character to the wine that is unique to this Central Wachau region and continue to delight the palate on a lengthy finish. This is a beautiful wine with excellent structure and a slightly fuller body. Definitely one to try!
The Wachau region of Austria lies along the Danube River located just west of Vienna in the Neiderosterreich state. This region benefits from the warming capacity of the river, as well as rich fertile soils. In Central Wachau, near the village of Weissenkirchen, the areas benefits from warming breezes that create richer styles of wine.
This is definitely a wine not to miss!
