The Vigneview Verdict
This bottle of Biddenden Special Ortega 2019 from Kent, England is jam-packed with history. First of all, Biddenden Vineyard was the first in England to plant Ortega vines back in the 1970s. Today, they make still and sparkling Ortega wines that range from dry to sweet. This particular wine is so ‘special’ because only 700 individually numbered bottles were produced using grapes from the original vines planted over 40 years ago.

If you’re looking for the perfect aperitif brimming with citrus and orchard fruit, then this is the perfect wine for you! Subtle blossom aromas along with refreshing nectarine, apple and grapefruit notes will lure you in. Benefitting from a rounded mouthfeel, the acidity isn’t mouth-puckering but still ample enough to refresh the palate. The finish is lengthy and filled with grapefruit notes that are lightly bitter, yet enjoyable. I found myself quickly pouring another glass and at only 12.5% abv, you’ll still be able to standing up straight after a glass or two!
