Tasting Notes

A 2020 Argentinian White Malbec Wine from Aldi

The Vigneview

I seem to be on a bit of a Malbec kick lately. Honestly, I love this grape because it so elegantly embraces, embodies and exudes the local terroir. When I recently decided to purchase an Argentinian white Malbec wine from Aldi, I was definitely venturing into new territory. At only £6.99 a bottle, I was ready and willing to take a chance! I’m already a huge fan of Argentina’s Torrontés white wine and was crossing my fingers that an Argentinian white Malbec would prove to be another hit!

White Malbec

At first sight, I would describe this as a rosé wine based upon the colour and method of winemaking. Basically, once the Malbec grapes are harvested, they are gently pressed so as to not impart too much colour on the free-run juice. Very little skin contact occurs, thus creating a “white” Malbec wine; however, I would describe the colour as pale copper-orange.

On the nose, gentle aromas of orange blossoms awaken my senses along with subtle strawberry and cherry notes.

On the palate I enjoy a burst of grapefruit, pomegranate and zesty orange notes on a lengthy finish. The off-dry sweetness of this wine draws you in while also adding a bit more body to the mix.

Overall, I think this is a great wine! It clearly demonstrates the versatility of the Malbec grape and how well it can be enjoyed as a white wine.

Food Pairing

Enjoy this beautiful Argentinian white Malbec wine from Aldi with slightly spicy dishes made with poultry or seafood. I enjoyed pairing this wine with my Buttermilk Chicken Enchiladas and the combination was so delicious! Spicy dishes pair well with slightly off-dry, low alcohol white or rosé wines. The subtle sugary notes within the wine add another flavour dimension rather than competing with the spicy notes. Alcohol creates a burning sensation on the palate and as the spices are already adding a bit of heat to the mix, you want to choose a lower alcohol wine to balance this effect. Finally, a lighter bodied wine with fresh fruit and floral flavours helps to not overpower the vibrant flavours within the dish. Basically, if everything is in balance, you’ll have a perfect pairing. Not too much and not too little!

Cheers! x
